MENDAKI: e-Brunch 2020

Taking a biannual physical event online amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

25 April & 26 July 2020 | Singapore | Remote Graphic Recording

Brunch with MENDAKI is a biannual event organised by Yayasan MENDAKI (Council for the Development of Singapore Malay/Muslim Community), gathering experts, educators, and guardians to discuss topics pertaining to education and schooling.

The seminars were usually hosted at physical venues, but in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, MENDAKI organised e-brunches that were broadcast via Facebook Live instead. A frequent collaborator with MENDAKI, Idea Ink was invited to capture panelists’ gems of advice remotely for 2020’s e-brunches.

HOME-BASED LEARNING

THE NEW NORMAL

With the circuit breaker measures in Singapore, home-based learning (HBL) has become the new normal for students, and this recent development was the focus of 25th April’s e-brunch. Reaching its audience via Facebook Live, MENDAKI invited Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, school principal Mdm Moliah Hashim, and MENDAKI Manager of Community Engagement Ms Suriane Mustajab to share tips with guardians about how they can support their children’s learning journeys amidst the pandemic.

Our graphic recorder tuned in to the live session remotely and illustrated a visual summary of the speakers’ sharings.

POST-EVENT TAKEAWAYS

With good advice to keep in mind, how do we retain information and avoid slipping into our old habits? Post-event takeaways took both an online and offline form for this digital event. We coordinated with a printer to generate physical print-outs of our graphic recording for MENDAKI to mail out as mementos and reminders for guardians and educators. We also animated the graphic recording, making it attention-grabbing on digital platforms!

Presenting key insights in bite-sized pieces that are complemented with colourful illustrations, the graphic recording was the perfect tool for sharing the content discussed while brightening up one’s social media feed!

TRANSITIONING TO PRIMARY SCHOOL IN A POST-COVID WORLD

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, July’s e-brunch was professionally filmed in a studio and broadcasted live on Facebook. With TV & radio host Fiza O as emcee, the discussion focused on schooling transitions, a period filled with changes for both guardians and children alike. PCF Sparkletots Senior Centre Principal Ms Noor Hayati Amid gave insights into how pre-schools impart life skills to kindergarteners, while Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim highlighted support programs and subsidies that guardians can tap on. Celebrity couple Syarif and Malaque also dished out parenting advice from their personal experiences.
